<image:caption>The nation’s first Littoral Combat Ship, Freedom (LCS-1) – the inaugural ship in an entirely new class of U.S. Navy surface warships – makes a spectacular side launch during her christening at the Marinette Marine shipyard. The agile 377-foot Freedom -- designed and built by a team led by Lockheed Martin -- will help the U.S. Navy defeat growing littoral, or close-to-shore, threats and provide access and dominance in coastal water battle-space. Displacing 3,000 metric tons and with a capability of reaching speeds well over 40 knots, Freedom will be a fast, maneuverable and networked surface combatant with operational flexibility to execute focused missions, such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare and humanitarian relief. This dramatic shot shows the train--the two power locomotives were doomed, as were the other nine--crossing the main line of the Illinois Central near DeSoto, Ill. <image:caption>Missouri Pacific Locomotive No. 1712, a 2-10-2 Sante Fe type/ SF-63 class engine. This Sante-Fe type steamer was built at the American Locomotive Company- Brooks facility in Buffalo, New York in 1916 for the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern line (StLIM&S). The Missouri Pacific Railroad acquired the SF-63 class Sante-Fe locomotive after the StLIM&S merged with the Missouri Pacific Railway in 1917. Originally numbered 1501-1514 by StLIM&S, they were renumbered MoPac numbers 1701-1714 in 1924. The class was scrapped by MoPac in 1953. International Representative Lloyd Russell (#465577), Boilermakers Lodge 113, worked on this locomotive at the Missouri Pacific locomotive repair shops in downtown Sedalia, MO.</image:caption>

The odd, elongated smokestacks were put on engines which went through the Cascade Tunnel in Washington. Purpose of the horizontal stacks was to carry the smoke beyond the cab. The original 2.63-mile tunnel completed in 1900 was supplanted by the present 7.79-mile one, the longest in the Western Hemisphere. This photo is a reproduction of the one taken in 1902. The others, the 1831 DeWitt Clinton, first train to operate in New York (foreground), and the Sam Hill, a woodburner of 1860, have been museum pieces for years. <image:caption>The Nation's Capital was stirred on Aug. 24, 1835, by the arrival of the first railroad train. The President, then Andrew Jackson, and members of his Cabinet, were on hand for the event. Shown above, the locomotive "Atlantic", pulling two Imlay double-deck coaches, led a procession of trains over the newly-completed line of the Baltimore & Ohio between Baltimore, Md., and Washington. One of the earliest of American steam engines, the "Atlantic" was built by Phineas Davis of York, Pennsylvania, and began operating on the B. & O. in the summer of 1832. Over the years it has been kept in operating condition and is now in the museum of the B. & O.</image:caption>
